Chris Boston – Australian Original Doll Artist

Since 1987, Chris Boston has exhibited in a wide range of galleries, shows and exhibitions in Australia, Germany and the United States of America accumulating a formidable array of awards along the way. As a result she is now recognised as one of Australia’s most highly regarded artists in her chosen field.

Her dolls and creatures are all original, one-of-a-kind pieces which she designs, sculpts and finishes entirely by hand. Each is genuinely unique, a product of her own imagination and the skills which she has continued to develop from her early successes of her ‘Pickled People’ days.

Chris is an unashamed stickler for scale, choosing either pure mohair or Lincoln wool for the dolls’ hair and her carefully constructed wire armature ‘skeletons’ make her dolls posable to suit individual needs. Heads, hands and feet are sculpted from Australian made polymer clay with each hand displaying Chris’ distinctive trademark of the usual thumb but with only three fingers rather than four to distinguish her Notsoblings from we ‘humans‘.

She wears her ‘Greenie’ tag with considerable pride seeking out recyclable doilies, dresses, curtains and tablecloths, sometimes re-dying to suit the character and essence of the piece but always retaining holes, stains and the ‘worn’ look for which she claims a passion. Inspiration for her work comes from many sources but there is no doubt that her favourite major pieces have been dedicated to Australian conservation themes with an emphasis on human encroachment into tropical and sub-tropical rainforests, eucalypt woodlands and the spectacular wildflowers of the Wallum heaths. Her concern for the continuing loss of habitat and its species is reflected in her work and in her voluntary community service as a registered wildlife carer, in which she specialises in the much-maligned flying-foxes.

Send Chris an email at chris@chrisboston.com.au or you can call her on 0439 660948.  Please know though, that she may be busy sculpting in the workshop and if so, she will return your call when it’s convenient.
